What is WordPress?

A bit of background information about WordPress…

WordPress is web software that can be used to create and manage a website. Since starting in 2003 as a blog publishing platform, WordPress has now evolved into a fully-featured Content Management System (CMS). A CMS, is a system that allows the owner of a website to edit, update and delete the content on their website without any technical or web programming knowledge.

WordPress is used by 14% of the top 1,000,000 websites on the Internet and, because of its open-source nature, it offers endless possibilities for Web Developers, Web Designers and end users.

Because of the highly customisable and extendible nature of WordPress, it’s perfect for almost any kind of website, whether it be online portfolios, dynamic business websites or even eCommerce. Clients are always impressed at how simple it is to manage their WordPress website.

Why use a Content Management System?

Using a CMS like WordPress means that the content and the design of a website is kept completely separate. The look and feel of the website is controlled by a web template. The administration area of a CMS, i.e. the area from which the content of the website is managed, is securely accessed through a web browser.

If, for example, a user wanted to add a new page to their website they would be able to do it without having to worry about making the design and layout the same as the rest of the pages on their website. All that is required to manage the content of a CMS website is a basic understanding of how to use a word processor like Mircosoft Word.

The result of using a CMS is that a website becomes easier and quicker to update. This allows the website owner to provide more regular, dynamic content, which in turn leads to a more interesting and therefore more likely to be visited website.
