America: The Story of the Diner

The quality of documentaries on BBC 4 never fail to impress and, with the current All American season, they’re excelling once again. Part of the season was America on a Plate: The Story of the Diner, which was first shown last week and is still available on the iPlayer for a while.

The whole documentary was excellent, a road trip through unseen America is always going to appeal because of my own American road trip memories, but it was some of the art in the programme that really grabbed my attention.

The two real stand-outs for me (aside from Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks) were Stephen Shore’s photography and John Baeder’s photorealism work. Links below…
